This hallmark gives rise to a holistic, interdisciplinary analysis of Portugal’s accession to and membership of the European Communities/European Union. Philosophy provides two operational categories – sebastianism and utilitarianism – to understand the rationale of Portugal in the European Union, which is usually captured through the lens of several Social Sciences. The article is an embryonic version of an ongoing research that combines the analysis of six case studies to find out whether sebastianism or utilitarianism explain Portugal’s accession and membership in the EU from the standpoint of elites and citizens.
Copyright (c) https://impactum-journals.uc.pt/debatereuropa/article/view/14887The Azores in the European Union: a two-level integration2024-10-28T13:05:03+00:00Diogo Ferreiradiogovieiraf@hotmail.com
Made up of 27 member states, the European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic entity that provides a multi-level platform to promote the involvement of various participants in the decision-making process in Europe. Among these are the European regions, namely those with legislative power - the regional authorities. However, there is a lack of studies on the effects of Europeanisation on regional governments. On the occasion of the 38th anniversary of Portugal's accession to the EU, this article explores the involvement of the Azores, as Portugal's autonomous and outermost region, in transregional co-operation within the European framework.
Copyright (c)
