Parece ter passado o sobressalto a respeito do destino do livro causado em vagas sucessivas pelos familiarmente chamados novos meios. Que o livro não morreu, que o livro até ganhou nova vida, que o livro afinal é insubstituível, que o livro é um instrumento aperfeiçoado e aperfeiçoável, são formulações hoje tão vulgares como as que lhe anunciavam a morte próxima por anacronismo ou desnecessidade. Por outro lado, o debate continua em torno da ideia de reedição do livro: quanto dos novos meios é afinal reedição do livro clássico? quanto do livro clássico é afinal antecipação dos novos meios? Este número de MATLIT (Vol. 2.1) pretende intervir nesse debate centrando-o no problema da materialidade, sugerindo um percurso de regresso a partir da pergunta «o que ensinam os novos meios a respeito da materialidade do livro?»
Dessa pergunta se podem deduzir os tópicos do debate que MATLIT pretende estabelecer neste número: a) materialidade e técnica: o progresso da técnica privilegia a materialidade ou é, desde a própria noção, a exclusão da materialidade?; b) materialidade e instituição: os novos meios envolvem problemas específicos que obrigam a reflectir sobre a possível dependência da noção de livro de um ordenamento jurídico (direito de autor, copyright, censura, liberdade de expressão, depósito legal, etc.)?; c) materialidade e arquivo: existe de facto o livro ou apenas o arquivo, quer dizer, a biblioteca? E a biblioteca é afinal um arquivo?
PRAZO: Os artigos devem ser apresentados até 31 de março de 2014, sendo os autores notificados sobre a aceitação até 31 de maio de 2014. Artigos e recensões são submetidos através do sistema em linha. Os autores devem registar-se e transferir os ficheiros para a plataforma. Book and Materiality
The unrest about the fate of the book that has been prompted in successive waves by the now-called new media seems to be fading away. That books haven’t vanished, that books even blossomed into a new life, that books are, after all, irreplaceable, that books are perfected and perfectible objects: all these assumptions are as common today as those which had been announcing the book’s near death, by highlighting either its anachronistic features or its utter un-necessity. On the other hand, however, an ongoing debate about the idea of reediting the book is still raging: which portion of new media can be seen, after all, as a reediting of the classic book? And which portion of the classic book can be interpreted as an anticipation of new media? Volume 2, Issue 1 of MATLIT aims to intervene on that debate, centering it on the question of materiality and suggesting a turning-back path from the fundamental question “What is it that new media teach us about the materiality of the book?”
The topics of the debate we intend to pursue in this issue will spring from the aforementioned question: a) materiality and technique: Is technological progress privileging materiality or does it mean, by its very notion, an exclusion of materiality?; b) materiality and institutions: Do new media involve specific problems leading to speculation about the possible dependence of the notion of book on legal issues (author royalties, copyright, censorship, freedom of speech, legal deposit, etc.)?; c) materiality and archive: Is there really the book or just the archive, that is, the library? And is the library an archive, after all?
DEADLINE: Article submissions will be due in March, 31, 2014, with notifications of acceptance by May 31, 2014. Articles and reviews must be submitted through the journal online system.
