The first issue was published in 2002 by the then CIMJ - Centro de Investigação Media &amp; Jornalismo// Center for Research Media &amp; Journalism, tackling a “diversity of the themes of its articles, methodologies and reflections” and being “a space that promotes qualified discussion, not only in the academic community, but also among all those interested in the media and journalism in contemporary societies.” The magazine is currently published by ICNOVA - NOVA Communication Institute, which has since merged with CIMJ. The journal is still published twice a year (April and October of each year), and is indexed in SCOPUS, Scielo and DOAJ databases, and it follows a rigorous scientific arbitration procedures. Moreover, all of its content is openly accessible and free of charge.&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1">Media &amp; Journalism publishes top academic research and is a space for qualified discussions aimed at elucidating the social and political dynamics prompted by media and journalism in contemporary society. The reflections contribute to a more profound and critical knowledge of the various factors, time periods and impacts of the<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>complex phenomena of communication. Em que contexto das relações entre ensino superior, ciência e economia é que surgiram essas exigências? Que tipo de predicados são requeridos aos docentes e investigadores? Quais são os argumentos usados para justificar o produtivismo científico? Qual é o desígnio conferido à ação de publicar e à de conseguir financiamentos? on studies of audience reception across various intersectionalities, including LGBTIQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, older adults, racialized communities, people with diverse body types, and women. The objective is to analyze how these social groups interpret and engage with their representation in various media formats (TV news, press, reality shows, TV series, feature films, social media, content creation platforms, etc.). Additionally, it is valuable to examine how general audiences perceive media discourses surrounding these intersectionalities. In this way, the goal is to explore both the mirror effect and the window effect within the audience.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></p> <p>On the one hand, we define audiences in a broad sense, encompassing all individuals who engage with and interact with media content reflective of their time (Ha, 2020). Moreover, we propose viewing audiences not merely as passive consumers of cultural and media content, but as active agents with a crucial role in interpreting these messages (Livingstone, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to understand and explore how these audiences relate to and engage with such content, as evidenced by recent studies, such as those examining the interpretations of trans individuals regarding their representation in television series (Villegas-Simón et al., 2024).<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></p> <p>On the other hand, like the society in which it exists, the audience is diverse and heterogeneous (Kristensen &amp; From, 2015). Thus, we are in a context where, historically, the representation of minority social groups has been underrepresented or often constructed through stigma and negative stereotypes (Sánchez-Soriano, 2023), as is the case with people with disabilities (Page et al., 2024) or individuals with diverse body types (Collins et al., 2024). As a result, numerous studies have focused on discourse analysis of both traditional and emerging representations (Ventura et al., 2024). However, we believe it is essential to shift the focus to the final stage of the entire media cycle: how audiences interact with these representations, examining how they engage with and respond to such content.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></p> <p>At the same time, social media has allowed the emergence of new content and representations that generate seemingly more diverse discourses, but which also compete with the spread of hate speech (Miranda et al., 2024). For this reason, it is valuable to develop new research that, within the framework of intersectionality, focuses on analyzing the reception of content from any media and format, including the press, radio, and cinema, as well as social media and content creation platforms like SVODs, while focusing on the current cultural and media context.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;<br><br></span></p> <p><strong>Topics:</strong></p> <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li class="show">Methodologies focused on audiences and their interactions with cultural and media content. The COVID-19 pandemic and recent wars accelerated a torrent of fake news and other information disorders (Galan et al., 2019, Frau-Meigs et al, 2017), in which social media platforms revealed underlying ambivalences. This is why it is so pressing to consider diverse approaches in the investigation that identifies what, how and where young people from diverse contexts and geographies propose their views and expressions of what is happening in the world. By anticipating normative and/or decolonised definitions of news, we aim to apprehend research that assesses themes related with youth voices and views of the world, their (dis)connection with news and contexts of digital citizenship.</p> <p>The research continually points to a shift from the traditional journalism environments to new opportunities for consumption and production (Clark and Marchi, 2017), fostering participative processes. By proposing the concept of “connective journalism”, Clark and Marchi (2017) highlight the need for sharing, having a self-view of the news stories, and considering making their stories. They also note a disruption between young audiences' needs and news outlets.</p> <p>What are the social environments where these processes are grounded? Even if the peer group influence has an impact, family, and in particular parents, are at the centre of the socialisation process for seeking news and different views of the world (Brites et al., 2017; Edgerly et al, 2018a; Lemish, 2007; Silveira, 2019), including contexts for operating digital devices (Edgerly et al, 2018a). The brothers wished to open "their objectives to the world", to reflect the reality of the planet, to inform. It is well established that audiovisual journalism was born and developed within the framework of cinema. The seventh art fostered and popularized journalism through documentaries and newsreels from around the globe which, together with fiction, were the genres most beloved and followed by the public.</p> <p>Audiovisual journalism was to later establish itself on television, where it spread as informative content, consolidating its place on programming schedules and creating its own audiovisual language. At the same time, journalism was carving out a space for itself in audiovisual fiction through stories showing the profession in practice, events based on real life, or stories featuring journalists themselves -or others from the communication industry-, that have configured a subgenre of journalistic fiction, an area which in recent times has produced some outstanding work, and which has been broadcast on the many different screen formats that make up the audiovisual industry.</p> <p>Thus, films like <em>Citizen Kane</em> (Orson Welles, 1941); <em>Ace in the Hole</em> (Billy Wilder, 1951<em>); All the President's Men</em> (Alan J. Pakula, 1976); <em>The Year of Living Dangerously</em> (Peter Weir, 1982); <em>The Truman Show</em> (Peter Weir, 1998); <em>The insider</em> (Michael Mann, 1999); <em>Good Night, and Good Luck</em> (George Clooney, 2005); <em>State of Play</em> (Kevin Macdonald, 2009); <em>Spotlight</em> (Tom McCarthy, 2015); <em>The Post</em> (Steven Spielberg, 2017); etcetera, make up a solid legacy of work about journalism and the media, which have been joined by another small contingent of programs conceived, produced and broadcast on television, such as <em>Lou Grant</em>(CBS, 1977); <em>Murphy Brown</em> (CBS, 1988); <em>Periodistas</em> (Tele5, 1998); <em>State of Play</em> (BBC, 2003); <em>The Hour</em>(Prime, 2011); <em>The Newsroom</em> (HBO, 2012); <em>Secret City</em> (Foxtel, 2016); <em>Crónica de sucesos</em> (TVE1, 2016); <em>Press</em> (BBC, 2018); <em>The Morning Show</em> (AppleTV, 2019); <em>Blinded </em>(TV4, Sweden, 2019); <em>Bala loca</em> (Netflix, 2016); <em>July 22</em> (NRK, 2020); among others.</p> <p>Apart from being represented in film and television fiction, journalism is also capable of presenting its work in feature film format. Documentaries are the most common genre for this perspective, though in recent times narratives typical of fiction have been appearing and have shifted to the setting of journalistic genres to give greater appeal to the author’s message, to make it touch the audience. In the same way, techniques such as storytelling, proposals such as docudramas, or more heterodox formats such as docuseries or audiovisual essays have become more commonplace. They propose mixtures of codes that broaden the horizons and blur the boundaries between information and entertainment.</p> <p>Starting from these initial coordinates, the monograph proposed for <em>Media &amp; Journalismo</em> aims to contribute to debate, to research, and to reflection, setting out the academic implications. The field of both research and practice around communication and social change has in recent years broadened, and this issue calls for contributions that shed light on the next-generation research questions and communication practices.</p> <p>The concept of social change has also in the past been associated with several paradigms of development and social change with shifting attention given to power structures, international organizations, private entreprise and civil society. The longstanding legacy of two dominant paradigms of development, the modernization and participation paradigm remain strong (Peruzzo 2012, 2014), but the field has expanded in many directions in recent years. It is these new directions in both conceptual development and communicative practices enhancing social change, that this journal issue wishes to capture.</p> <p>Epistemologies of the South, decolonial perspectives, intersectional approaches and a broad variety of critiques of dominant western paradigms of development are opening new avenues of inquiry, allowing new voices to be heard, and challenging power in multifaceted ways. Strategic communication is still very much part of the efforts to articulate change through or with communication, but the thinking informing the field of communication and social change draws on new sources and is opening to other knowledge systems.</p> <p>Communication and social change seem in many ways to be a field in the early stages of reformulating theories of communication and change as well as seeing new practices of communication emerge or become visible. However, the dominant paradigms of communication and of social change are also innovating and gaining new strengths. The call is open for original and systematized contributions on the complex modalities of the tantalizing relationship between media and society. We want to promote a critical edition, able to historicize the academic thought in this field of studies, to debate with new insights the identified problems, and to project creative and engaging solutions for the future.</p> <p><em>Media &amp; Jornalismo</em> was the first Portuguese academic journal to systematically publish pioneering research in the field of communication sciences. Maintaining the initial focus of being a qualified discussion space to understand the social and political dynamics activated by the media and journalism in contemporary societies, this special issue cannot fail to signal the transformations in the objects of study and theories.</p> <p>In the first two decades of the second millennium, society has become datafied, and new conglomerates of production and circulation of the symbolic reign. Structured on a technical infrastructure that fulfills the dream and nightmare of technological determinists, machines have become intelligent. People adjectivize politics as "disruptive" and "extreme", journalism has almost disappeared, public spheres have become privatized and maintained ongoing dynamics of fragmentation, activisms are digital, and algorithmic programming capitalizes on the spheres that most characterize the human and the post-human: intimacy, affections, emotions.</p> <p>The new media, networks and digital communication tools have not only transformed our way of perceiving and telling reality, but also the structure of social relations, the circulation of information between broadcasters and audiences in any context, the commercial exchange between producers and consumers, the debate between political, social, economic and cultural agents in public spaces, the production and dissemination routines of audiovisual content, the way of conceptually representing the world around us and, in short, also ways of feeling, thinking and living.</p> <p>We are witnessing, in fact, the birth of a new society, in which technological innovation associated to the cyber world, the virtuality of narratives and their robotized viralization are some of the characteristics of this great digital earthquake that shakes the foundations on which the productive system of modern communication is based, affecting in particular the traditional media, in the emergence of a new transmedia panorama in which classic journalism and serious and rigorous informative discourse have lost their protagonism in the simplification of communication models that trivialize or disregard the reality of facts or promote disinformation and propaganda at the service of manipulative causes that pervert the democratizing meaning of the Internet and social networks.</p> <p>In this special issue of <em>Media &amp; Jornalismo</em>, we want to reflect in an interdisciplinary and multi-methodological way on the ruptures and permanencies that most mark the last 20 years of production, distribution, sharing, and reception of journalistic and media content by differentiated and globalized audiences. The populist assumes strategies of communication and rhetoric that value the perception of the existence of a monolithic people, whose identity would be threatened by the action of enemy groups -what some leaders call “Homeland enemies”. In this sense, populism is defined as discourse based on simplistic judgments and easy dichotomies, where the people (the crowd) are told what they hope to hear, polarizing society and dividing citizens between good and bad people.</p> <p>Last decade we have witnessed the emergence of populist governments in several countries around the world, that threaten the rules of liberal democracy, especially regarding individual rights, freedom of expression and press. They are populist and authoritarian governments installed many times, based on the holding of free elections, followed by the attempt of constitutional changes, which aim to perpetuate the leaders in power and to condition civil and human rights. Contemporary populisms, or neopopulisms, seek to distort the notion of “volonté générale du people”, adulterating this democratic value, to attack, in the public sphere and through an anti-democratic rhetoric, instances of representation and mediation. &nbsp;The preferred targets have been parliaments and courts, knowledge institutions, scientific communities, social and humanitarian movements, and the media themselves. Thus, modern authoritarian populisms, embodied by leaders who are or have recently left power, such as Donald Trump (United States), Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil), Recep Erdogan (Turkey), Viktor Orbán (Hungary), Rodrigo Duterte (Philippines), Matteo Salvini (Italy) and others, increase, or have increased an attitude of contesting democratic values and their institutions of mediation and regulation.</p> <p>In this scenario, the mainstream and new media assume an evident centrality both in creating the conditions for the emergence of the populist phenomenon and in offering the ideal technological equipment for the popular leader to be able to establish a direct communication with the “people”.</p> <p>Social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and instant messaging applications (WhatsApp, Telegram) gave to populists’ great visibility in the public sphere from the dissemination of extremist and conspiracy theories. Examples of this situation are the profiles of ghost users and the “shots” of false, uncharacterized and or modified information, based on programming technologies mastery and data misappropriation. The networks strategy of populist leaders also involves the denounce of “bad information” disseminated by traditional media that oppose to populist theses, accusing them of factional and false makers of news. The traditional media, despite being permanently attacked by populist rhetoric, have a direct relationship with the phenomenon. In fact, they have contributed last decade, directly, to the naturalization of populist rhetoric, by giving visibility to the messages of these leaders in the media coverage. This journalistic discourse encouraged political conflict and the growing discredit of democratic institutions, as happened in contexts of journalistic corruption scandals coverage. &nbsp;</p> <p>The relevance of the topic and its centrality in Communication Sciences in this debate leads the review Media &amp; Jornalismo to invite researchers to submit articles that discuss the contemporary populisms. We encourage the submission of original articles with a historical perspective on journalism or whose focus is on problematizing historical research about journalism, from a methodological point of view. The view of journalism as an actor in history and the theoretical issues arising from the mediatization of history are areas of research relevant to this edition. The media as builders of collective memories and the journalistic outcomes generated around strong, “painful” memories or resulting from historical trauma and expiation processes, are valued in this call. The history of the profession, journalistic institutions,&nbsp; companies, and journalists, in Portugal and in the world, preferably from a relational, cultural, and critical perspective, with a focus on the contemporary history of journalism (XIX and XX century onwards) are relevant for publication within the scope of this issue.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">More generic historical questions, as long as they are articulated with journalism and the media, such as the history of censorship, of media regulation, the digital, of the technologies and innovation processes, the journalistic coverage of politics, of celebrities, the dynamics and institutionalization of journalistic values, elections coverages, trends and changes in journalistic narratives and the preservation of journalistic outputs themselves, are also research topics which for discussion. The articles must be rigorous original, contain a clear explanation of the main problem, the theoretical framework, and the methodology. Articles with the inclusion of empirical results, with critical analysis and capable of contributing to sustained interpretations of more general phenomena based on specific case studies and time frames, are valued. The articles will be subject to a first evaluation by the coordinators of the issue and by the editorial board of the journal, to assess their suitability for the objectives of the call. Without “genre” and “format”, we would lose two intrinsic categories of the &nbsp;communication and journalistic&nbsp;<em>ethos</em>. However, the study of this field, beyond its traditional approaches, is not yet fully explored, given the conceptual framework guided by new approaches such as hybridism, transmediality and innovation in media and journalism or in the context of multimodal and multimedia methodological research (Liestol &amp; Morrison, 2016).</p> <p>Understanding the journalistic genre as “the class of units of mass communication that groups different forms and respective types of transmission” (Marques de Melo &amp; Assis, 2016, p.49) and the journalistic format as&nbsp; the shape of the information transmitted by the media (idem, p. 50), these units need, nevertheless, a new reflection and mapping when we face reader reviews, locative media, mini-documentaries in virtual reality, live-tweetings or a simple infographic that is assumed as “the” journalistic format and not the medium. At the same time, the growing transformation of journalistic pieces into what Steen Steensen calls a family of genres that shares a “literary, intimate and adventurous discourse” (2011, p.50), obeying the new news value of sharing on social networks, puts the frontier between opinion and information genres at stake. This blurred frontier is clear, for example, in cultural journalism (Santos Silva &amp; Silva, 2017).</p> <p>In this issue of Revista&nbsp;<em>Media &amp; Jornalismo</em>&nbsp;we suggest a discussion about the most recent advances in journalistic genres and formats framed in two fundamental approaches. First, that of innovation, using the classic definition of Joseph Schumpeter who sees innovation as “new combinations” of what already exists or the implementation of an invention in a specific socio-economic context. Second, that of hybridity, which we can see in the frontiers between what is journalism and what is not journalism, between what is an opinion and what is information, between what is specialist and non-specialist. This trend has come as a response to the opportunities and constraints – brought by the emerging creative digital ecosystem. The growing social role of creativity and its economic impact (Howkins, 2001 and Florida, 2002) also imposed the need to rethink media practices as part of creative industries that provide us with symbolic content (Hesmondhalgh, 2007).</p> <p>This multidisciplinary and convergent context triggers a number of research agendas that need to be revisited: first, the innovation typologies proposed to understand products, processes, positions, and paradigms (Storsul &amp; Krumsvik, 2013; Bleyen et al., 2014; Santos Silva, 2016); second, the available case studies related to innovation and entrepreneurship in the media and in these creative industries; next, the emerging journalistic practices and the reconfiguration of their narrative formats, the repercussion that innovation and creative industries have on the curricula of higher education institutions (Crespo, Foa &amp; Cardoso, 2016).
