Abstract

In 1921 Coimbra University Press published, in monographic format, two crucial works for the study of Modern pottery in Portugal. Algumas palavras a respeito de púcaros de Portugal ("Some words about Portuguese pottery cups") by Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcellos and A cerâmica coimbrã no século XVI ("Coimbra’s pottery in the 16th century") by Joaquim Martins Teixeira de Carvalho gather the first documentary references to pottery production, since then, repeatedly cited in essays dedicated to this subject.
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of these editions, a summary is presented concerning the tableware intended for the consumption of liquids or beverage containers (mostly water) in Coimbra during the 15th and 16th centuries, based on the collection exhumed in archaeological surveys carried out in the old episcopal palace of Coimbra. As a result, the regional morpho-typological evolutionary framework of these productions that notably flourished from the mid-16th century onwards has been established.
