Abstract

The presence of the archaeoanthropologist in the excavation of cemeteries and the interdisciplinary study applied to the funerary field means the possibility of obtaining individual and collective records, both specific and general, inside of research projects, as well as proposing useful interpretations for the knowledge of the past. The cemeteries of Castelló de Empuries are presented as a paradigm of this type of research in a geographical área centered on the northeast of the península. The contrast of the results obtained from archaeoanthropological, archaeological and chronostratigraphic studies often raises a univers of questions that are difficult to answer. Once the chronological interpretation from constructive typological markers has been overcome, the decisive contribution of the C14 datation represents a notable advance, to wich the rest of the resources shoult be added, both in the analysis of archaeological, biochemical or geological materials and of written and figurative documents, a great challenge for the achievement of an increasilingly concrete knowledge of the human and social lanscape of the high medieval period.
