This paper considers the centrality of space regarding the (in)visivilities of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) people, using a case study in the Autonomous Region of Azores. It is a qualitative study that uses semi structured interviews to analyse the perceptions and experiences of local LGBTQ activists, adopting insularity as a lens to analyse the ways in which sexualities are situated in space and time.
The insular geography reveals itself as a very promising tool, showing that the isolation stemming from the geographic conditions exceeds geography and slips into non normative experiences, isolating them and creating what I suggest to call Island-Activists.
