Abstract

The article proposes an interpretation of Parmenides’ poem as a methodical path of persuasion. According to this proposal, the poem is divided into two distinct domains: the convincing discourse and the opinions of mortals, which are not simply false but rather “deceptive.” It rejects the possibility of a specifically “Parmenidean doxa,” as is still commonly assumed, to establish that these opinions belong to the “mortals.” They can deceive precisely because they are “similar” to the truth and are therefore capable of seducing the listener. In this sense, the concept of the “deceptive” emerges as a key category for understanding Parmenides’ didactic strategy.
