Bestiary of the aristotelian ethics

This paper mainly aims at introducing thought about the role played by animals in the Aristotelian ethics. Most of the studies devoted to this subject explain how the animal is excluded from the morality, or bear upon the flaw named “bestiality” by Aristotle. However, such a perspective is reductive insofar as the animal appears in the Ethics otherwise as a foil. Hence, we would like to shed light on the reasons why Aristotle uses the animal in his ethics by determining its functions. The paper rests upon the Nicomachean and the Eudemian Ethics, more specifically the parts considering the particular moral virtues of courage and temperance, which are especially interested by animals. The paper is shaped into a bestiary; each note explains the introduction context of the animal, its function, and the challenges related to its presence
