This paper presents some considerations concern-ing metaphorics of painting in Plato’s Republic, especially in books VI and X. In the first part, the concept of metaphorics of painting is established, in order to propose a methodology for addressing the metaphors themselves. In the second, the appearance of the painter in the ideal city is presented to show a case where painting has a use for representation that is not metaphorical. In the third, the metaphorics of painting related to philosophy in Book VI is analyzed. And in the fourth, it is analyzed in relation to poetry in Book X. Finally, other issues relevant to metaphorics of painting in the Republic, linked to shadow and desire, are pointed out.
