Abstract

In Plato’s Sophist, the characters Stranger and Theaetetus search for the sophist’s definition. They agree that a sophist is an imitator, a fiction producer. According to the dialectical method, it will be necessary to answer: what kind of imitation is used by the sophist? An imitation might be ei-ther εἰκαστικήorφανταστική. Such division of theτέχνημιμητική has caused a lot of discussion between different scholars. In this text we intend to analyse and compare some interpretations about the meaning of theτέχνηεἰκαστικήspecifically. Doing so, we will be able to better understand Plato’s intention. Finally, we will be led to clarify the nature of philosophy itself as presented in Plato’s dialogues.
