Pleasure and memory in the Philebus

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing some passages on sense perception in Plato ́s Philebus, having in mind the relation between pleasure and memory. In the context of the analysis of pleasures (31B-39A), what different kinds or levels of memory may one effectively identify, in a way that is consistent with the demands of the argument? I propose one should recognize memory as a wider kind, with two species, that differ according to process or result: remembering (mneme) can be seen as the preservation of perception and reminiscence (anamnesis) as the recovery of different affections experienced through the body, perception or knowledge.
