This paper consists of six remarks on the concept of aretê, which, in the course of the Greek culture, took on not one, but several meanings. While going over those meanings, the paper also examines how the signification of aretê became more restrictive from a civic point of view, directed at the qualification of being a citizen, as well as from a philosophical point of view, in regard to moral life as qualifying human being. Considering both aspects - being a citizen and being a human - the paper also lays emphasis on the tenor of the conversation between sophists (Protagoras and Gorgias) and philosophers (Socrates and Plato) in respect to acting more appropriate while being aretê.
