In this essay, one tries to formulate an analysis and history of the concepts of preservation, restoration, and conservation. We address very briefly the paradigmatic approaches around the terms, starting with their etymology, but situated in the debate from the nineteenth century to the present day. Our main objective is to demonstrate the development of the discussion about these concepts over time. We developed a literature review based on research in scientific databases and academic articles. In conclusion, we observed that there are issues with the translation and adaptation of the concepts analyzed in different linguistic contexts.
