The archive of the Pontifical and Royal College of St. Peter (1545-1834)

Abstract

This paper presents the archival description of the collection of the Pontifical and Royal College of St. Peter. This institution that was integrated into the University of Coimbra from 1572, began to be installed next to the Royal Palaces, after being based, since its foundation, in 1545, in Rua da Sofia, left marks on those who attended it and also at the University itself, where they came to teach some of its collegiates. What relations were established with the University, knowing that the Rector of the University made regular visits to the College and who were the schoolgirls, portionists and family members who attended it? And what churches belonged to your patron? In making the archival treatment of its registry office, documentary typologies were identified that contain diverse and vast information, which allows answering all these questions and many others, about the internal life of the College, its form of administration and heritage that it possessed, until it was extinguished in 1834.
