The publication of a new issue every semester, the growing number of texts in English, its status as an
internationally indexed journal and the wide variety of geographical contexts explored in the articles published
are some of the aspects that characterise the current relevance of Cadernos de Geografia on the occasion of
the publication of its 50th issue. In a context of great challenges promoted by the standard of international
publications and the preference for journals with a higher impact factor, this text analyses the evolution of this journal in the 40 years since the publication of the first issue. The figures analysed not only illustrate
the evolution of the journal, but can also provide an insight into the development of Geography as a field of research in Portugal.
