This paper is a contribution to the tribute to José d’Encarnação payed by his colleagues and the journal Conimbriga. It aims to present a brief overview of his scientific production in the field of Epigraphy, which overlaps with the paths of this discipline in Portugal in the last fifty years. The paper is organized around seven topics: a set of which concerns his research on the definition of Epigraphy, its methods and objectives, his contribution to the task of editing epigraphical texts and his works of didactic nature, as well as those dedicated to the teaching issues of the discipline. Additionally, some of his preferred subjects are presented, among which are particularly highlighted the aspects of the religions and cults and the analysis of social reality. A portrait of his research on the History of Epigraphy and on the relations between Epigraphy and Archaeology complete this overview of José d’Encarnação’s publications.
