Call for papers - Special Issue on EU external relations towards the East

2017-03-07

The journal Debater a Europa is indexed with ERIH PLUS and Impactum UC.

This call is for a Special Issue on EU external relations towards the East, with a focus on Russia and the post-Soviet states, the contributions should also include analysis on relations with the United States of America. Coordinated by Maria Raquel Freire (CES|FEUC), this Special Issue seeks to analyse the state-of-play in EU relations with Russia, the post-Soviet countries, and the USA, aiming at identifying new issues and potential new avenues for the current difficult status in relations. The Ukraine conflict became the most visible signal of dissension between the west and Russia, with serious implications for EU policy, as well as for relations among these different actors. It also forced a rethinking of issues, debates, and possible ways ahead in face of deep lines of divergence. This Special Issue seeks, therefore, contributions that from a theoretical and/or empirical perspective add to the analysis of EU external relations in view of the many challenges the Union currently faces, with a focus on the political-security dimensions of these.

Topics to be addressed include (other suggestions welcome):

  1. EU foreign and security policy
  2. EU Neighbourhood Policy, with particular focus on the Eastern Partnership
  3. EU-Russia relations (politics, security, economics, energy…)
  4. USA-Russia relations (politics, security, economics, energy…)
  5. EU-USA-Russia relations (politics, security, economics, energy…)
