Abstract

The behaviour of expansive soils is discussed on the basis of the principle of effective stress, composition and geological history; some methods considered useful for identification and quantification of the volumetric variations are described; the geological and geotechnical factors to be taken into acount in the design of deep and shallow building foundation of semi-rigid structures are analiyzed.
