Call for Papers: Visually Speaking: The Form of (new submission deadline)
Coordinators: Leonel Brites and Clara Almeida Santos
Challenged by the acceleration and inexorability of time, the last 20 years have seen profound changes in the way information is communicated. The democratization and expansion of Internet frontiers imply new ways of reading, consuming, and interpreting information, opening up different paths and possibilities. Today, through the unquestionable preponderance of digital systems, news comes to us through a multiplicity of forms - text, images, videos, sound, interactive graphics, 3D systems, virtual reality, or augmented reality - enabling the immersion of the public in each story. We can virtually follow events from any part of the globe, anytime, in real-time, step by step, through the ubiquitous screens.
At the same time, Media professionals seek to ensure solutions capable of responding to the demands and expectations of audiences, in an increasingly complex and global design. Today's Media, characterized by the presence of multi and transdisciplinary languages and skills, are accompanied by increasingly interactive and engaging visual solutions, as well as highly complex graphic and typographic systems. At the same time, image capture devices and image editing programs are simpler and less expensive, also dictating changes in the way information is communicated.
This issue of Mediapolis focuses on an in-depth look at the visual dimension of Media, in its multiple formats and supports. This call will accept proposals that explore the impact of new visual forms in different dimensions of the Media: from journalistic narratives to the graphic architecture of magazines and newspapers, from their photographic, typographic and infographic discourses, to the challenges caused by multiplication platforms or the ubiquitous dimension of advertisements, among others. The editors of this volume, Leonel Brites and Clara Almeida Santos, from the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies – CEIS20/University of Coimbra, invite you to submit scientific articles that can be included in the theme The Form of the Media, addressing, namely, the following topics:
- The graphic architecture of newspapers, magazines or other media, in digital or printed environments;
- The Visual dimension of Media, with a special focus on the role of images (photography, illustration, infographics, multimedia galleries, among others), the form of texts (typographic design, graphic architecture, interface design, among others), and their strategies for branding;
- Visual strategies and media narratives, in different times, contexts and territories;
- Consequences of using mobile devices in the creation or consumption of news;
- Competences of Media professionals and social, professional, and technological changes within newsrooms;
- Visual and media literacy, transmedia narratives, or others related to the emergence of new formats powered by digital technologies, the use of drones, virtual reality, augmented reality, or 3D printing, among others.
Articles must be submitted by September 15 2022, to be included in Mediapolis #16, referring to the first semester of 2023.
