Se analizan tres grandes incendios forestales ocurridos en Chile en la pasada temporada de 2017. Fueron eventos catastróficos nunca antes vistos en este país, por lo menos desde la época de la colonización del sur de Chile, hace más de 150 años. El artículo se organiza, primero, con una breve descripción de la ocurrencia y cifras de daños, para luego aplicar el concepto de severidad en estos tres incendios. Luego se explican algunas referencias sobre las líneas de investigación necesarias para mejorar el actual programa de protección contra incendios forestales en Chile.
