Abstract

The impact of the detonation of a nuclear weapon in a city is catastrophic, causing the death and injury of tens, or hundreds, of thousands of people and the destruction of the urban structures. This article aims to examine more closely what would be the physical and human impact of a nuclear terrorist attack against the city of Lisbon. The approach involved analysing the quantitative results obtained with a program that simulates the physical reality of a nuclear detonation, applied to the area of Lisbon. By coupling this with the analysis of other information concerning the strategic bombing of Germany, the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the nuclear tests conducted during the Cold War and other related research, it was possible to conclude that this impact would entail the complete destruction of the human and economic core of the city. The infrastructure would be destroyed along with thousands of buildings within a 50 km2 area, killing more than 96,000 people, wounding more than 168,000 and contaminating an extensive area including the Peninsula of Setúbal.
