The article offers a brief introduction to the Mémoire sur l'origine et les progrès des Pantomimes chez les anciens, the first ever work by Silvestro Pinheiro Ferreira (1769-1846). The essay, which concerns ancient pantomime, was never published by the author. It has come down to us through a single manuscript witness, an autograph preserved in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo in Lisbon. Forgotten until now, it is an original and truly archetypal study by Silvestre Pinheiro Ferreira.
