This study presents one of the forty‑seven philosophical questions in Viridarium (1632) by Fr. Francisco Mendoça SJ, professor of philosophy in the College of Arts of Coimbra. It is a matter of astronomic theory, and its reading provides interesting information about the teaching of science in the colleges of the Society of Jesus. Namely, this teaching is not only characterized by its exactitude in the transmission of Aristotelian heritage, but it is also aware and discusses the contemporary scientific discoveries of the seventeenth century.
