This paper publishes two death records referring to the Bishop of Coimbra D. Miguel da Anunciação (1703-1779), who died in August 1779 in the Monastery of Santa Maria de Semide. One of the records was drawn up in the parish of Semide, the other in the parish of São João de Almedina, Coimbra, where the Episcopal Palace was located. These records document the circumstances of his death and the fate of his remains. The troubled life of D. Miguel, marked by his long captivity in the prison of Pedrouços because of his firm opposition to Pombaline regalism, earned him the halo of martyrdom. His death triggered a popular movement questing for his relics.
