The women “devassas do seu corpo” in Coimbra during the first half of the 18th century

Based on pastoral visitation sources, this study analyze the conduct of women who were accused of “devassas do seu corpo” in the university city of Coimbra and as a source of analysis, it has the books of visits and a book about Extracto de Culpados from the city of Coimbra (1668-1743), during the first half of the XVIII century. The pastoral visitation offer a rich material on the moral behaviour and “public sins”. The goal is to analyze the characteristics and social profiles of those involved in practices of prostitution (“meretrício”), alcoviteirice, consent and houses of alcouce.
