Abstract

This paper aims to analyze a collection of documents found in the “Camiña” section of the Medinaceli Duchal Archive, which holds a large amount of documents related to the Meneses family from Portugal, counts and marquises of Vila Real and also Governors of Ceuta. With the passing of time, the Meneses family had managed to gather a large estate in the Portuguese kingdom. However, and after the enthronement of the House of Bragança in the 17th century, the unfailing loyalty of the Meneses towards the Spanish monarchy provoked their punishment. As a compensation for their dire situation, the King of Spain adapted and castillianized the Meneses titles of nobility, transferring them onto the last surviving female member of this family.
