Abstract

Throughout the centuries, correspondence has been the primary means of transmitting and circulating ideas and knowledge. Aware of the importance and the informational richness of private epistolaries, the catalog and diplomatic study of the correspondence received from Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel, 2nd Viscount of Vila Maior (1809-1884), is presented in this work. The correspondence treated reveals the different areas of activity in which he became involved as a scientist, an academic or a politician. The summary of the 474 letters of the correspondence received required a high degree of completeness, and its availability seeks to be a further contribution to the knowledge of Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel’s personality.
