Abstract

This article aims to study the D. Frei Agostinho da Anunciação, archbishop of Goa (1691-1713), in two main aspects. On one hand, his personal and academic career, the Order of Christ and the University of Coimbra. On the other hand, his role as archbishop of Goa, but also as temporalgovernor of the State of India (1691-1692/3 and 1701-1702/3). This article seeks to discuss the historiographical vision, by focussing on the action developed by the regular clergy, that devaluate the role and action of bishops, archbishops and Portuguese dioceses within the ambitious task of the evangelization in the overseas territories, particularly in Asia.
