Training and education in accessible tourism: The case of Faial, Pico and São Jorge professional schools

Abstract

The theme of universal accessibility in tourism, also known as accessible and inclusive tourism, and other expressions, are present in strategic plans, speeches and presentations of several organizations and institutions. Education and training in tourism in general and in the themes of universal accessibility and mobility in tourism in particular, are important in the perspective of the universal accessibility to places, and qualified human resources. This article investigates whether the above-mentioned themes are present in the National Qualifications Catalog, particularly in the areas of training related to the tourism sector, as it presents the main results of a survey applied to students of the tourism courses of the professional schools of Faial, Pico and São Jorge islands in Azores. We found that in a total of 524 Short Course Formation Units, 5 addressed the themes of accessible and inclusive tourism. Regarding the results of the survey, a total of 107 respondents reported that 66 did not have any module or training in the area, it’s more than 60%.
