In an era of images’ prevalence, tourism as a consumer of spaces appropriates visuals resources to promote and sell tourist destinations. Relying on this perspective, this article aims to critically discuss the image representation of the slums in tourism’s visual guides, used by tourists for orientation in the urban space. The conceptual content of imagery and spatial representation provides the theoretical foundations to analyze some ways in which the s lums are represented as part of the aesthetic composition of the landscape of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The semiotic theory is adopted as one of the methodological pathways for this study.
