Abstract

During the archaeological excavations carried out in 2007 at the National Museum Machado de Castro (Coimbra) a set of glass was recovered from a garbage dump. The dump was sealed by layers resulting from the refurbishing of the Episcopal Palace, promoted by Bishop Afonso Castelo-Branco between 1585 (date of his investiture) and 1592. The accurate dating of the archaeological deposit and the circumstance that its entire content has been the subject of analysis make the study of this vitreous set an excellent point of departure for a significant approach to 16th century glass in Portugal. Comparison with this finds allowed a better understanding of other glass fragments collected during ancient interventions carried out elsewhere in the city.
