Abstract

History of the French pharmaceutical industry: from freedom to probation (1800 to nowadays). The history of the pharmaceutical industry in France, from 1800 up to now, is a surprising history which starts really during the XIXe century. Over the years, more and more constraints will be controlling all the activities of this industry during research and development as well as during the commercialization phase. Some key steps were important milestones for this industry in France such as the Germinal law (1803) which will be at the origin of the responsible pharmacist requirement in the industry, the 1914-1918 world war that was an opportunity for the industry to recognize the need for an active R&D activity, or also the 1941 law that officialized the pharmaceutical specialties and a visa to approve their commercialization. The growing cost of new treatments will need to review the present model of this industry to allow most patients to have access to all useful pharmaceutical innovations.
