Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced throughout; uses 10 or 12 point font (Times New Roman is recommended); employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements which is found below.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Submission guidelines

Thank you for choosing to submit your paper to Twentieth-Century Studies. Please read the guidelines below carefully before submitting your manuscript in order to ensure your work matches the journal’s requirements.

This journal does not charge fees to submit or publish.

Twentieth-Century Studies publishes original work only and work that is not under review for publication elsewhere. All articles will be submitted to a double-blind peer-review process.

 

  • Structure

Twentieth-Century Studies publishes articles of between 6,000 and 7,500 words (including notes and references). The editorial board will not consider submissions outside this range for revision. Please include a word count for your paper.

Articles may be submitted in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.

Your submission should be organized in the following structure: title page; 300-word abstract; five keywords; main text; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices; table with captions; figures with captions.

English versions of the abstract and keywords are required if the article is written in Portuguese, French or Spanish.

Twentieth-Century Studies also welcomes book reviews of works on any field considered in its Aims & Scope. Book reviews should have between 1,500 and 2,500 words.

 

  • Style guidelines

Articles must be submitted to the journal’s platform: https://impactum-journals.uc.pt/estudossecxx/about/submissions

The text should be double-spaced throughout, standard 10 or 12 point font (Times New Roman is recommended) and with a minimum of 3cm for left and right hand margins and 5cm at head and foot.

References should follow APA (American Psychological Association):

This includes an alphabetically-organized bibliography with all works mentioned in the text.

In order to protect anonymity, authors must avoid any self-citations and other personal data in the main text, such affiliation, contact or funding information. This should be inserted in a separate text file (cf. Author details).

 

  • Images

You may include images in your submission. Please make sure all images and other figures are high quality.

Authors are also responsible for the copyright of any materials published with the article. Make sure any required permissions for the reproduction of images, tables and any other figures is obtained prior to publication.

 

  • Author details

Please ensure all authors have their name and full affiliation inserted on the title page of the manuscript. You may also include references to ORCID and other identifiers, or to pages on social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter). In order to ensure anonymity, the title page will not be shared with peer reviewers.

 

  • Biographical note

Short biographical notes should also be supplied for each author. You may adapt already existing notes from your departmental website or other academic networks (the word limit for biographical notes is 200 words).
