A conservação do património edificado histórico é uma actividade que requer multidisciplinaridade, que deve ser orientada por princípios teóricos sólidos e apoiada nos mais modernos conhecimentos técnicos e científicos. O texto que se apresenta, e que resume o conteúdo da XV Lição Manuel Rocha, aborda alguns conceitos teóricos desta área de actividade e ilustra certos aspectos controversos ou insuficientemente conhecidos e que, por isso, justificam a investigação científica e a discussão teórica.
