In this study the ultimate bearing capacity of driven high capacity steel pipe piles is evaluated by using static and dynamic tests with increasing energy. The studied piles were driven in a soft clay over weathered gneiss. Dynamic tests with increasing energy and static loads were conducted on the piles. The results of the static and dynamic tests are compared with the predicted capacity from dynamic formulas and semi-empirical static methods (Aoki-Velloso, 1975; Décourt-Quaresma, 1978, 1982). Both measurements and predictions indicate that most of the static resistance results from point bearing. In order to analyze the structural resistance of the steel piles studied, during the dynamic tests with increasing energy these piles were submitted to high energies, in most cases higher than their yield stress. Therefore, the results of the static load tests are lower than the results of the dynamic tests (i.e., about 70 or 80% of the yield stress).
