Abstract

This paper summarizes the results obtained in tests for characterization of one of a set of three soils investigated in the context of a larger laboratory study conducted on soil materials from the Portuguese territory, frequently employed in geotechnical works for transportation infrastructures, particularly in the construction of embankments. An initial physical and chemical characterization on the natural soil material was conducted, followed by a similar study on the soil stabilized with three lime contents (1.5, 2.5 and 4% of calcium oxide). In order to assess the immediate change of properties of the mixtures, the following characterization tests were performed: particle size analysis, determination of Atterberg limits, methylene blue and sand equivalent values, and particle density, as well as Proctor compaction tests and CBR. This article will focus especially on the relevant results obtained in triaxial tests on samples of the natural soil and the referred mixtures stabilized with curing times of 7 days and 1 year, both in terms of mechanical and hydraulic response. The effect of time in cementation due to beneficial pozzolanic reactions will be discussed here and associated with the gain in resistance obtained in axial compression test, conducted with increasing curing times.
