This paper presents the geotechnical characterization of the alluvial deposits of the River Tagus that take place in the foundation of the new railway embankment at Santarém and the definition of a solution for the improvement and reinforcement of that foundation. The solution defined, based on the results of the geotechnical characterization, consisted on the acceleration of the consolidation process of the alluvial deposits in the foundation, by means of a network of prefabricated vertical drains, associated with preloading, and the reinforcement of the base of the railway embankment with high resistance geotextiles.
