Abstract

Odelouca dam is a zoned earth fill dam with 76 m height presently being constructed at South of Portugal. The embankment material is clayey soil, at the core, and weathered schist with a significant fraction of oversized particles, at the slopes. Compaction control during the construction is performed through in situ tests and laboratory compaction tests. Conclusions are drawn about the accuracy of the in situ methods based on available correction expressions (Torrey & Donaghe, 1994) of maximum unit weight and optimum water content of Proctor test results for soil-rock mixtures. New correction equations for the Proctor reference values for schistose material are presented based on results of vibratory compaction tests of large samples.
