Influence of the precipitation on the occurrence of landslides at Coimbra, in the last 139 years

In this study the precipitation data related with landslides occurrence in the area of Coimbra are analysed, in an attempt to get a relation between the precipitation intensity and landslide occurrence. The landslide occurrence was obtained mainly consulting old regional newspaper. The precipitation data for the interval period from 1864 to 2003 were facilitated by the Geophysical Institute of the University of Coimbra. The results permit to conclude that the landslides take place when the rainfall is higher than the mean values. It was also possible to prove that the maximum intensity rainfall is the trigger mechanism for landslides. The year accumulated rainfall for the mean return period, are normally associated with higher rates of landslides. It was also possible to define the lower bound rainfall able to trigger landslides, following the methodology of Chleborad (2000).
