About the mechanical behaviour of joints in rock masses

Abstract

The fundamental concepts of the mechanical behaviour of rock joints are presented, together with experimental data about the normal and tangencial stiffness and the shear strength of the joints. Toe importance of the wall roughness in the mechanical properties of the joints is emphasized and some new results on this matter are presented as well.
