Abstract

The aims of the design of tunnels in rock are analysed, in terms which are intended to be realistic. After considering the different possible purposes of the tunnels, which impose on them certain geometrical and interior finishing characteristics, the parameters and the geomechanical phenomena involved in the construction are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the functions of the support. It is concluded that, at the present state of knowledge, the definition of suitable constructive technologies must be considered as an aim of the project since, in general, it is more important than the settling of the strength characteristics of the final lining of the tunnel.
