Abstract

The present article begins by presenting an introduction to the fractal theory and geometry, with a particular importance to the evaluation of the fractal dimension of sets. It is followed by some examples that use the ideas from this theory to problems in the geotechnical area. The perco lation through discontinuities, the characterization of the roughness of joints, the discontinuities network and fragmentation in rock masses and the extent of faults will be overviewed.
