"Secondary" settlements of clays, i. e., settlements due to volumetric changes of the soil when subjected to constant effective stress, were studied in some detail in a previous work (Folgue, 1961). Some tertiary over-consolidated clays seem to present analogous behaviour, with settlements mainly of the "secondary" type. This matter and its influence on the design of foundations is presented and discussed.
