Abstract

The limit state (failure) of compacted (disturbed) clayey soils highly over consolidated and under very low effective stresses is characterized by the occurrence of traction fractures, is described. It is very different of the limit states of over-consolidated soils (failure along sliding planes) and normally consolidated or lightly overcosolidated soils (failure according the elastoplastic hardening models). It is shown how the first dam reservoir fill up can generate significant overconsolidation of the embankment soil. The reasons for failures due to the occurrence of cracks are dealt with and the consequent structural disturbances are analyzed. Two accidents due to failures involving deep soil cracks are presented. Lastly, some thoughts about the geotechnical plastic design domain are introduced.
