In the Tarot, the XVI Major Arcana is represented by the card The Tower, which symbolically evokes the individual’s ruins, as a subject inscribed in history and the reconstruction of the self that, from the debris of the past, can be rebuilt as a subject of the narrative discourse it constructs. In the novel The Illustrious House of Ramires, the tower–an emblematic space for the character Gonçalo–is a significant chronotope through which to consider the elements that, as Paul Ricoeur systematizes in Time and Narrative, shape the space where history and fiction intersect. From this perspective, the aim of this study is to analyze the dynamics that generate tension between historical and fictional discourse, focusing especially on the literary workshop of Queirosian creation as mimicked by the character who within the plot, takes on the task of guiding the reader through the intricacies of writing.
