The chronicle was an important means of criticism and dissemination of ideas in the 19th century. Under the statutes of this literary genre, Eça de Queirós (1845- 1900) and Ramalho Ortigão (1836-1915) produced the pamphlets As Farpas– crônica mensal da política, das letras e dos costumes. In the first two years of the publication’s circulation, between 1871 and 1872, Eça contributed with texts that satirized various aspects of Portuguese society. After leaving to serve as consul in Cuba, Ortigão continued with the publication until 1882, and in 1890 he proposed the republication of Eça’s texts, which was accepted by the author on the condition that he himself revised his texts and changed the original title of the work. Thus, Uma Campanha Alegre (1890-1891) was created, a revised version with parts removed from As Farpas. This article analyzes the October 1871 chronicle, originally published in As Farpas, and its modified version in Uma Campanha Alegre, focusing on the suppressions related to Education. It seeks to understand the reasons that led Eça to eliminate certain passages, considering the sociopolitical and ideological context of the time.
