The Topology of Marble: The Matter of Estremoz’s Built Heritage

Resumo

This paper addresses built heritage from the perspective of marble as a cross-scale legacy between distant and close places. Through Estremoz marble we make visible that heritage is not only a static element to preserve but a matter continuously in motion across time and space. Topology of marble brings to the fore this awareness of seeing the interconnection between its geological formation, the extraction and the constructive processes, in a multiplicity of cycles still in transformation. 

The article is structured by the simultaneity of in-here and out-here interconnections: (a) Here and In-here, maps the motion of marble from the quarries with the built urban heritage of Estremoz; (b) Here and Out-here, renders visible the intimate connection with distant places, such as Europe, Africa, and South America.

Cidalia Ferreira Silva, Lab 2PT; School of Architecture, University of Minho

Cidália Ferreira Silva (PhD) is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at the School of Architecture of University of Minho, Portugal, and integrated researcher at Lab2PT. Her research on Time expands the field of architecture to investigate other opportunities to engage meaningfully with contemporary places-life.  By see(d)(k)ing Time, she holds uncertainty for a creative deepness that crosses time-space, embracing “(not-)Knowing” as the primeval focus. 

Luis Duarte Esteves, School of architecture, University of Minho

Luis Duarte Esteves, recently graduated in Architecture by the University of Minho, Portugal. He is the author of the master thesis “The Estremoz Marbleize: Landscape in Motion” (supervised by PhD Architect Cidália Ferreira Silva). This research explores the complex transformation processes associated with the marble exploitation, revealing the cross-scales interconnection between its geological formation, extraction and construction, which has built since the Roman Empire a global architectonic and urban heritage spreaded around the world.
