In this article we offer an interpretation of a well known poem by the ancient Greek poet Anacreon (fr. 357 PMG) by paying attention to its peculiar textual history. We suggest that the poem – a prayer to Dionysus – presents some of the features that are characteristic of the riddle. But first and foremost we are interested in offering this interpretation as an example of how knowing and working with the different editions of a single text can throw light on certain poetic aspects that would otherwise remain veiled, and how it can also stimulate the creative activity of the interpreter herself.
