Abstract

Using a broad notion of materialities, the article touches upon some aspects of Viennese modernity with the aim of highlighting several dimensions of the practice of writing that offer relevant parallels to the work of Fernando Pessoa.

Author Biography

António Sousa Ribeiro, Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra

António Sousa Ribeiro is Professor in the German Studies Section of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and a senior researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra.  He was coordinator of the Ph.D. Program «Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature» (2010-2012), and is coordinator of the Ph.D. Programs «Post-colonialisms and Global Citizenship» (CES/FEUC), "Languages and Heterodoxies" (FLUC) and "Modern Cultures and Literatures" (FLUC). He was president of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts (2000-2002), chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (2009-2011), president of the CES Scientific Council (2003-2007), and general editor of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais between 1991 and 2008. He is currently the coordinator of the board of directors of CES. He has published widely on issues related to literatures and cultures of German language, comparative literature, aesthetics and literary theory, cultural studies, sociology of culture, and post-colonial studies. He is also a literary translator.
