Abstract

The successful series House of Cards portrays the world of American politics and its relationship with informative media. This study aims to explore the social representation that this audiovisual production makes of journalism and journalist women who specialize in politics, through the actions of its main character congressman Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and news reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), in order to determine if there is any biases and gender stereotypes in the eight episodes of the first season. A qualitative approach is used with a narrative design, as well as the conversational analysis method and the critical discourse analysis. Results and conclusions suggest that journalism is represented as a profession lacking in ethics and as an instrument of the executive and legislative power, and journalist women as egocentric people who can be easily manipulated and who ascend in the media hierarchy because of their looks and not for their training and intelligence.
